Kirkus Reviews — Kirkus Staff
Rated: Positive · Published:
“Read this for the action-packed plot, not character development or worldbuilding.”

Every once in a while, Kirkus's relentless efficiency produces something genuinely beautiful: a review so concise and devastating that it transcends its own format. Their Fourth Wing review contains the sentence 'Read this for the action-packed plot, not character development or worldbuilding,' which is the literary equivalent of a doctor saying 'The surgery was successful but we lost the patient.' They are simultaneously recommending the book and listing the two things that make a fantasy novel good as things this book does not have. It's a backhanded compliment delivered with such deadpan sincerity that I refuse to believe the reviewer wasn't fully aware of what they were doing.

Let me break this down. Kirkus is telling you: the dragons are cool, the romance is steamy, and if you go in expecting a coherent magic system or characters with more than one personality trait, that's on you. This is the most honest book review ever written. Every other publication either pretended Fourth Wing was the next Game of Thrones or dismissed it as unserious — Kirkus alone had the institutional bluntness to say 'it's fun and it's dumb, and those two things can coexist.' I want to frame this review and hang it above my desk.

The brevity works here in a way it usually doesn't for Kirkus. When you're reviewing a 500-page fantasy novel about dragon riders at a military academy and your entire review boils down to 'vibes: good, substance: no,' you've communicated everything a potential reader needs to know. This is Kirkus at its accidental best — so committed to efficiency that it occasionally stumbles into devastating truth. The review is better than most think pieces about BookTok that are ten times its length.
