The Original Review

IGN — Rafael Motamayor
Rated: 8/10 · Published:
“One Piece Season 2 expands the world in exciting ways, delivering some of the best live-action anime adaptation we've seen.”

There's a special kind of confidence that comes from reviewing a show adapted from a 1,100-episode anime when your entire anime knowledge comes from that one time you saw Spirited Away on a plane. IGN's One Piece Season 2 review radiates this energy like a microwave with the door open.

The reviewer calls this 'some of the best live-action anime adaptation we've seen.' The bar for live-action anime adaptations is so low it's a tripping hazard in hell, so this is technically true in the same way that the best-tasting cough syrup is still cough syrup. Dragonball Evolution exists. The 2017 Death Note exists. Netflix's own Cowboy Bebop died so fast it didn't even get a funeral. Saying One Piece is the best live-action anime is like saying you're the tallest person in a room full of chairs.

The review spends exactly zero sentences discussing how the adaptation handles Alabasta's political themes, Vivi's character arc, or any of the source material beyond surface-level plot summary. It reads like someone watched the show, Googled 'One Piece wiki' for fifteen minutes, and then wrote 'expands the world in exciting ways' because that sentence applies to literally any sequel of anything ever made. Season 2 of a cooking show expands the world in exciting ways. My last grocery trip expanded the world in exciting ways.

IGN doesn't review anime. IGN reviews the vibes of anime. The 8/10 is for 'it looked expensive and I recognized the concept of pirates.' Manga fans who've spent 25 years with this story deserve criticism that at least pretends to understand what it's looking at. This review doesn't pretend. It doesn't even try. It just smiles, nods, and gives it an 8 because the CGI was good and nobody explained what Haki is.
